WebAbstract Thin plate splines and kriging models are proposed as methods for approximating unknown response functions in the context of process optimization. Connections between the methods are discussed and implementation of the models using S-PLUS is described. WebThe thin-plate splines have an important advantage with regard to universal kriging because they do not need to fit variograms. Moreover, the estimators of the thin-plane splines can be obtained in a closed form by solving a linear system of n equations, where n is the number of data points.
